#4 – Peace-Garden

Posted on October 30, 2011 by Ashima Kudaisya

Ranked #4 on our “Byward’s Best Lunches Under $15” is the Peace-Garden, a fully vegetarian and mainly vegan restaurant.  I for one am not a vegetarian, but the the lack of tofu and aromatic spices did not make me miss meat at all.  In fact I often forget that I’m eating a vegetarian meal- the food is delicious, period.

From the moment you step into this place, it strikes you why it is named Peace-Garden.  Located at 47 Murray Street inside the Times Square Bldg (misleading name I know), this restaurant is a perfect getaway for relaxation during your work hours!  (I do have to admit though, the tight space accentuates my klutziness as I run into chairs and knick knacks as I juggle my ridiculously large bag, phone papers, coat and umbrella).

The Peace Garden was established 20 years ago by the disciples of Chinmoy Kumar Ghose, also known as Shri Chinmoy. This Indian spiritual master advocated meditation, chanted mantras and prayers, performed dedicated service to God as a way to personal enlightenment. He especially asked his disciples to adopt a vegetarian diet and this spiritual enterprise was inspired by Shri Chinmoy.  There is love, warmth and peace reflected in every corner of this place and some of us couldn’t resist but connect with the positive energies of this place.  For those of us not as spiritual, we connected with the flavours of the place :0)

Their Indian platter is a best seller, but our particular favorites are their soups, gently heated in the slow cooker.  Throughout the summer we’ve tasted all of their flavours, and I’m not exxagerating when I say they are ALL fabulous, especially the lentil daal soup (made daily) and the squash soup (not daily).  Their apple crumble is also divine…but also acts as a reminder that vegan does not equal healthy or low cal :0)

Go through our quick slideshow of this place below to experience it for yourselves.  With a number of great reviews already and a listing in a Frommers edition of Ottawa, we’re just a few in the long line of fans of this place.  If you haven’t already, try this place out!

Agreed. A great place to eat.

Even tho it is slow-food ambiance, the video could be paced twice as fast.

As they pointed out to me, the name of the restaurant is hyphenated. http://www.pagehalffull.com/eatenup/2011/10/25/peace-garden-9/
