Ranked #8 on our “Byward’s Best Lunches Under $15” is Murray’s Market. Fans of Murray’s Street Restaurant (and who isn’t?) are now able to enjoy their signature charcuterie menu as well as delights made of locally produced cheeses, meats and produce from this more casual eatery. Their “meat cone”, a butcher’s paper cone filled with pan fried game meat, salami, bolognie and weiners topped with cheeses and fancy condiments is a carnivore’s dream, and all for under $10.
Alas being a non-pork eater (unfortunately this dietary limitation sizably reduces the choice available at Murray’s Market), the meat cone was not for me. Instead, I tried the lamb sandwich. I don’t know how to say it, except for “mmm mmm good”
The lamb was sandwiched between a baguette and topped with a fancy garlicy tzatziki sauce. It was tender, juicy and full of flavor. Not a light meal, but definitely a delicious one. The free cucumber infused water was my drink of choice (have also seen it infused with strawberry and citrus fruit this summer).
Being a sucker for clever thematic decor, I loved the vintage oven with the guest book filled with testimonials (a quick read showed them to be mostly glowing testimonials), the barrel table bases, the visual map displaying the location of the restaurant’s vendors, and corny signs like “the udder stuff” for the milk. Murray in a Hurry’s (clever, no?) take out options were diverse, great for a quick dinner on the way home. Bascially, if you want Murray Street quality and Murray Street service without having a full sit down meal, Murray’s Market is the way to go. (Though make sure your vegetarian friends are well aware that this place was not built with them in mind.) Two thumbs up from the OAK crew.

Sadly, Murray’s Market has now closed.
I know! There was no such indication when we went there. This place will be missed!
Yeah! Was surely a unique place in Ottawa.
